The Western Alberta Regional Victim Serving Societies (RVSS) provide a broad range of services under the Victims of Crime and Public Safety Act and Regulation, and in partnership with the Government of Alberta (GoA), the Alberta RCMP, specialized and community-based victim serving organizations, municipalities, and other local agencies.
The RVSS assists victims of crime throughout the criminal justice process by providing the core services of information, support, and referrals. The RVSS also supports communities by providing resources and support to people undergoing loss and tragic circumstances.
Service delivery is responsive to the needs, concerns, and priorities of clients of the program.
Roles & Responsibilities
Note: This volunteer position is specific to the Grande Prairie area.
The RVSS recognizes the importance of volunteer contributions towards enhancements of the Regional Victim Services Program. A volunteer or Advocate is anyone who freely and willingly commits their time to preform services to the RVSS’s and who does not receive compensations for their services, other than reasonable expenses incurred while preforming the services.

Participating in On-Call Schedule
- Rotate within the on-call schedule to provide urgent support for victims of crime outside of regular business hours
- Respond promptly to calls for assistance, offering empathetic listening, crisis intervention, and resource referrals as needed
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while providing on-call support, adhering to organizational policies and procedures
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of client interactions, services provided, and outcomes achieved, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with privacy regulations
- Prepare reports and updates for the leadership team and stakeholders, highlighting key activities, achievements, and challenges encountered
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of advocacy services through feedback, suggestions, and evaluation of program effectiveness
Education & Experience
- Minimum 18 years of age or older
- Canadian Citizen
- Be willing to commit for minimum of 1 year
- Be willing to regularly volunteer and cover after-hours on call shifts per week
- Have no criminal convictions for which a pardon has not been granted
- Be able to communicate fluently in English
- Complete mandatory training during onboarding and ongoing to maintain an active skillset
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations
- Empathy, compassion, and a non-judgmental approach to supporting individuals in crisis
- Knowledge of community resources, legal processes, and victim support services preferred
- Willingness to undergo training and development opportunities related to advocacy and cultural competency
- Commitment to upholding ethical standards and maintaining confidentiality in all interactions
- Availability to participate in on-call rotations and attend occasional evening or weekend events as required
Additional Requirements
- Criminal Record Check required
- Valid class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent)
- Online Victim Services Training will be provided upon commencement
